The NHS COVID-19 app is no longer in use and the Isle of Wight trial has now ended. This is archived information from 18 June 2020. If you still have the app, please uninstall it.

We’ve worked quickly to build the NHS COVID-19 app because that is what the situation demands. However, we have not let this urgency compromise our commitment to transparency, ethics and the law.

We have been consulting with:

  • the Information Commissioner
  • Members of the National Data Guardian’s Panel
  • the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation
  • representatives from Understanding Patient Data
  • volunteers who provided a patient and public perspective

We have also established an ethics advisory board for the app, chaired by Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery from University College London who previously headed the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. Their advice and expertise will be crucial to everything we do.

We have published both Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery’s letter (PDF:194KB) to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, setting out the Ethics Advisory Board's key principles for an ethical and effective COVID-19 contact tracing app, and the Government’s response (PDF:177KB) to this.
